Moving from Manhattan to an Outer NYC Borough

So, you’re thinking about moving out of the middle of the City and into an outer borough? While it may not be that huge of a move distance-wise, especially compared to a cross-country or international move, there are certainly things you should know before moving from Manhattan to Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island or the Bronx!

SPACE, SPACE, & MORE SPACE

Moving out of the cramped inner city, leads you to a luxurious life of space! Is that a kitchen table I see? Oh, and an actual closet? Wait a minute…is that…A YARD?!?! Of course, there are exceptions, but generally-speaking, you’re going to get more space for your buck in every borough that isn’t Manhattan. So, say so-long to downsizing and hello to more square footage!

NYC

$AVING$

By moving out of the inner city, you will save so much money—rent is cheaper, coffee is cheaper, and even some grocery stores are cheaper! These savings can turn into really treating yourself! Take that extra change jingling around and purchase a kitchen table—seeing you’ll have room for one now.

Expand Your Mind

Moving out of the inner city means more of a commute, for some. Pop in some ear buds and spend your time on the train by listening to your favorite podcast or book on tape! Utilize your commuting time by cracking open a good book on the subway or find some new music!

Find NEW Favorite Spots!

Sometimes leaving your comfort zone is good! Learn some of the hottest spots in your new home-borough… because the best bar is always the closest one. Who knows, maybe your future spouse or next best friend is awaiting your arrival at one of your new borough’s hottest spots!

Now, while there are some great pros to leaving Manhattan, there are some things you should keep in mind when leaving….

Queens NYC

Keep In Mind:

Most outer boroughs are not on the grid system! Be sure to have Google Maps handy when it comes to exploring out of your new neighborhood… you’ll probably need it.

It would be a good idea to get sign up for the monthly Unlimited MetroCard. You should also prepare to utilize Uber or Lyft to get around for those times you just don’t feel like taking public transportation.

Decrease in Cost of Living = Decrease in Pay Though the cost of living in Manhattan is certainly higher than in any of the other four NYC boroughs, the pay is higher as well to compensate. Realize that if you’re moving to the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn or Staten Island for a new job, your pay will be somewhat less as well. It’s all relative! The best way to take advantage of this is to work in Manhattan, make Manhattan-rate pay, and then live and play in of NYC’s other four boroughs!
