Best Winter Activities in NYC

The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting colder, and ice is starting to coat the sidewalk on your commute to work. All the signs point to winter being upon us. The best way to escape the dread that comes with the sun setting at 4 pm is to embrace it and find your favorite winter activity. Maybe you’re a homebody that prefers snuggling up in your favorite blanket watching the 10-hour video of a fireplace on the TV in your apartment, or maybe you like to take to the streets in search of an after-dark adventure at 6 pm. Whatever your preference, NYC has great options for embracing winter and finding activities to keep seasonal depression away – here are some of our favorites.

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

For the “new to town-er” – If you’ve just moved to NYC and looking to be inundated with Christmas spirit, you’ll want to check out the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. It’s an annual tradition and an iconic part of the winter season here in New York. This year, the lighting will take place on the 30th of November, so mark your calendars! While you’re at it, if you’re looking to check off the tourist attractions in the city, you can ice skate on the rink at the base of the tree – although there are several less-crowded and cheaper options scattered throughout the city.

Hot Chocolate in NYC

For the cozy lover – If you prefer to stay inside this winter, there are plenty of options to settle in with a tasty cup of hot chocolate. You can make a stop at Serendipity 3 to try their iconic frozen hot chocolate, although you may have to wait in line. To avoid some of the waits, check out other highly rated cafés that offer top-notch hot cocoa like Daily Provisions in the Flatiron District or Squish Marshmallows in the East Village. Visiting museums is also a great way to stay indoors this winter that won’t break the bank. Many museums have free days or “pay what you wish” options so you can enjoy the experience on a budget.

Radio City Music Hall

For the showgoer – As the biggest city in the country, NYC is chock full of ways to experience shows and the holiday season is the prime time to do it. The Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall put on a world-renowned show each year during the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, and you can find holiday-themed musicals on Broadway during this magical time of year. Looking for a little more laid-back environment? Check out a comedy club. Some comedians take to underground shows to test out their new material, so you might even get to see some great exclusive comedies.
