Save The Bathroom for Last: Packing Tips from the Moving Pros

If it’s time for your family to move, you have one big job ahead of you: sorting and packing all of your stuff! The easy way to handle this is to have the professionals do it for you – talk to your moving company about packing services – but let’s say you have lots of free time and love packing boxes. Here are some moving tips you need to know:

Start With Your Storage Unit:

It may sound counterintuitive, but the attic, garage and storage areas where you stow seldom used things are ideal locations to begin the sorting and packing process. It may be that you decide you no longer want to hold onto some of these items: sell them or donate them to charity. Don’t forget to think about life in your new locale: if you’re headed to Florida, you may not need to pack your snow blower and shovels!

Start Amassing Boxes and Packing MaterialsUse Recycled Boxes and Bags:

Recycled boxes and bags are ideal for collecting items you plan to donate, sell, or otherwise dispose of. A good rule of thumb is that if you haven’t used it in a year – or you’ve forgotten you own it! – you probably can let it go. Don’t count on recycled boxes and bags for moving purposes though, as they’re just not strong enough. Talk to your moving company about moving boxes, custom shipping crates, wardrobe boxes and any specialty packing materials you may need.

Empty Your Drawers:

It seems fast and simple to move a dresser without taking the clothes out of it – until you actually try to lift that dresser! Clothing and other possessions can double or even triple the weight of a piece of furniture. Loaded drawers also put undue stress on your furniture while it’s being moved, which can result in expensive breakage. Empty your drawers before you move your dressers!

Pack The Kitchen, Bathroom & Bedroom Last:

The items you need and use every day should be the last items to be packed. Make sure everything is labeled clearly, so you can quickly identify and unpack these boxes first in your new address. Any item you cannot live without for twenty four hours, such as prescription medications or a baby’s favorite toy, should travel with you instead of in the moving truck.

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask Questions:
