Operation Explore the Neighborhood: Moving to Brooklyn

One of the best things about moving to a new neighborhood is discovering all of its quirky, unique attractions. One of a kind businesses, singular museums, must-try restaurants, and surprising historical sites all combine to give a neighborhood its special character. This week, we’re looking at three of Brooklyn’s most interesting features, as identified by Atlas Obscura.

The Robotic Church in Red Hook

Go to 111 Pioneer Street in Brooklyn, and you’ll find the Old Norwegian Seaman’s Church. Inside, the artist collective Amorphic Robot Works spent nearly 30 years creating robots out of old junk; each one plays music in its own unique way.  Concert performances are scheduled throughout the year, and the church is open to the public. It’s a neat combination of art, technology and the divine that is both cheerful and thought-provoking.

The Bushwick Country Club

The first thing the Bushwick Country Club will tell you is that they’re not a country club at all. There’s no golf course within sight, nor a banquet hall for your wedding reception. Instead, the self-described ‘craptacular dive bar’ is renowned as the home of the Pickleback Shot – a combination of pickle juice and whiskey that many people adore. They’re sour and strong. The Sunshine Laundromat

Now when you’re looking for something fun to do, the words “Let’s go to the laundromat!” may not spring to your lips. But the Sunshine Laundromat, located at 860 Manhattan Avenue, is different. You’ll find the expected washing machines and dryers there, of course, but you’ll also find a jaw-droppingly awesome collection of classic pinball machines. And they serve drinks! Plan your trip for after 2 in the afternoon, though – arrive any earlier than that, and you’ll have to watch the clothes in the dryer for your entertainment.
