Classes are over, and it’s time to enjoy a break. Amidst the holiday celebrations and catching up with friends, make sure to keep one eye on the future: if you’re studying abroad, traveling for an internship or field project you’re going to need a place to keep your things that’s safe, secure, and affordable.
Choosing the Storage Option that Saves You the Most Money
At first glance, storing things with family and friends may seem like the most budget friendly storage option for students. But you have to take the costs involved in moving all of your things back home – it can take a lot of gas to make that round trip; if you have furniture, you may need to rent a moving truck – before you make that decision. There’s also the issue of your stuff’s security while you’re away. The fact that your friends are nice people doesn’t mean there aren’t any sketchy people living in their neighborhood or building.
Student storage units are available for rental on a short-term and long-term basis. This means you can arrange your storage based on your personal needs: if you’re planning to stay an extra week after your semester abroad or only need a student storage unit for half a semester, you can – just make sure you arrange everything with the storage company ahead of time. If your plans change while you’re away and you need to extend your storage unit rental, call your storage company as soon as you know to update your agreement.
Check out the student storage unit before you agree to rent it. You want to be sure the unit is clean and in good repair. Most NYC storage facilities take care of their units, but there are those that don’t, so you want to check. Same thing with security: you want to be clear on what level of protection your possessions will enjoy while you’re away. Security can range from minimal to Mission Impossible-like extremes; make your choice based upon your needs and your budget.
