New York City has quite a reputation: if you want to have an experience you can’t have anywhere else, come to the Big Apple. That’s especially true during the holiday season. If you’re looking for Christmas cheer, there are some attractions you won’t want to miss. Here are our New York holiday favorites:
The Dyker Heights Light Show
Lots of New Yorkers decorate for the holidays, but in Dyker Heights they pull out all the stops. The entire Brooklyn neighborhood is festooned with thousands of colorful lights, shimmering decorations, snowmen, reindeer, Santa Clauses and more. Some displays feature animation and music. The ideal time to see the show is the early evening. Plan on taking the car, or if you’re going to view the display from on foot make sure to dress warm!
Ice Skating in Bryant Park
No New York holiday season is complete without ice skating! Tourists love skating at Rockerfeller Center, but New Yorkers seeking a slightly less crowded experience grab their skates and head for Bryant Park. There are plenty of cute holiday shops in the area – and if all that skating has made you hungry, the waffles at Wafels & Dinges will fill your tummy in the most delightful way!
The Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum
Tired of the same old, same old holiday routine? Head to Time’s Square and check out the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, which specializes in the odd, obscure, and downright strange. They have a piece of the actual New Year’s Eve ball on display. Super fun for kids, the Black Hole and Laserace are what holiday memories should be made of!
Radio City Music Hall – See the Rockettes
If we had to pick one iconic New York holiday show, there’s no doubt, Radio City Music Hall’s Christmas Spectacular would be it. The Rockettes put on a dazzling show, with their signature kickline one of the surest signs the holidays are here. There are 4-5 performances most days, and if you’re planning on enjoying the show with your kids, aim for an earlier showing: they’re often less crowded and can work with bedtime schedules.
Christmas at the Central Park Zoo
The Central Park Zoo is open 365 days a year. If you’re an animal lover, spending some time in the company of snow leopards, grizzly bears, lemurs and penguins is a special gift. Make a point of watching the sea lion feeding: their antics can be laugh out loud funny. The Tisch Children’s Zoo features lots of fun play activities as well as the only cow in Manhattan! It’s a great way to introduce kids to where the milk that goes with Santa’s cookies actually comes from.
