How to Pack Breakables so they Don’t Get Broken

Keeping your fragile items safe throughout a move requires a lot of patience.  You don’t want to arrive at your new home with broken glassware, mirrors, antiques, plates, etc.  Preventing these items from breaking is a matter of preparation and the proper materials.

Best Materials to Use

To ensure your breakables won’t get broken, the best materials to use are packing tape, packing paper, scissors, pliable cardboard, quality boxes in various sizes, foam, and bubble wrap.  It is not recommended to use towels, blankets or paper towels to wrap your fragile items because they are not strong or reliable, and will not secure your belongings properly.

Plates

Each plate should be wrapped in bubble wrap and secured with a piece of scotch tape.  Plates should be stored vertically in small/medium boxes.  For fine china, we recommend placing a piece of cardboard or cushion foam between each plate and on the top and bottom.  Make sure to not over-pack the box and to fill all empty spaces with bubble wrap, foam or crumpled newspaper so the plates do not move around.

Glasses and Fine Glassware

Wrap each glass individually with packing paper and place crumpled paper inside the glasses to reduce empty space.  Line the boxes with plenty of packing paper on the top and bottom.  Make sure to layer spaces around glasses with paper as well. To diminish the risk of damaging these items, place the heaviest items on the bottom of the box, with lighter pieces on top.

Pictures/Frames/Mirrors

Wrap all frames in packing paper with painters’ tape expanding to the edges to prevent the glass from moving or shifting.   Add more packing paper on top to ensure items don’t move around in the box and protect the corners of the mirror or frames with foam.  Wrap the whole item in bubble wrap and protect each piece from the other by using layers of crumpled up newspaper, bubble wrap, or foam sheets in-between the pieces.

Abnormally Shaped/Specialty Items

For other pieces, wrap them in newspaper, tape securely and then re-wrap in bubble wrap.  Make sure all edges and angles are protected by using foam for any points or delicate edges.  If you are stacking items, use pliable cardboard in between layers and fill any extra room with crumpled paper and/or bubble wrap when necessary.
