Tips for Moving the Tech-Loving Family

“I’m a website designer and developer,” Adam said. “My wife Lorianne works in the entertainment industry, and our twin boys are avid gamers. You could say technology is at the heart of our life.” The family is moving to California for Lorianne’s career. “That means we’ve got to get all of our electronics packed up, moved, and then set up again. We’re talking about multiple computers, monitors, big screen tvs and game consoles. It’s going to be a huge job!”

Here are some tips to make moving your tech easier:

Take pictures of your set up before you pack it.

Capture an image that shows how the wires are configured on your computer, tv, or other tech before you disassemble and pack it. This will provide a helpful visual reference you can turn to when it’s time to set everything up again.

Twist-tie, label, bag and box cables.

Working one item at the time, secure cords in neat bundles. Label each bundle with the name of the item the cords go to. Don’t skip this step: you may think it will be easy to remember afterward but this is often not the case! Bundles of cords can be stored in large plastic bags, which should be boxed together for easy storage.

Pack in original boxes whenever possible.

Many tech-savvy families make a habit of keeping the original boxes their tech came in. This is great for moving purposes: make full use of the Styrofoam packing materials manufacturers have included. If this isn’t an option for you, talk to your moving company about strong moving boxes. Label boxes clearly, indicating which way is up. Computer monitors and large screen TVs need to be moved in an upright position, with care taken not to put excess weight on top of them. Accurate labels are essential!

Remove batteries prior to moving.

Riding around in a moving truck can be tough on batteries. You don’t want batteries to be compromised inside your devices: they can leak acid and damage your tech. For safety’s sake, remove all batteries and pack them securely in a tote for transport. Label each as needed so it can be returned to its device efficiently.
