Moving From a Warm Climate to a Cold One: 4 Things You Need To Know
As New York City’s top relocation company, we’ve helped families move into Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs from all over the country. Some of these people, especially those from warm, Southern climates, had no idea what the cold climates would be like. With that in mind, we’re going to share these four need-to-know-tips:
Cold Weather Living: Cold Happens Sooner Than You Think
Snow doesn’t just happen at Christmastime! Check the stats for your new neighborhood. You want to know the average temperature and precipitation amounts. It’s not uncommon for the temperature in the Northeast to start dropping off sharply once October arrives. Cold exposure can be a serious problem. Take advantage of any time you have to get prepared by adding warm clothing, including sweaters, sweatshirts, coats, hats, gloves, boots, and other gear to your wardrobe.
Cold Weather Living: Your Car Needs an Upgrade
Winter weather is hard on cars. It is strongly recommended that you invest in snow tires for winter driving – the all season wheels that are so common throughout the South make driving treacherous when there’s an inch or two of snow on the ground. Be aware that when you’re moving into a region where people are acclimated to snow, life’s everyday obligations go on: you’ll need to drive to work, school, and the grocery store just like always. Have your mechanic change your oil and check your fluids with your new living situation in mind. You may want to consider investing in a more robust battery with a greater number of cold cranking apps.
Cold Weather Living: Blankets Are Your Friend
Keeping warm and cozy at night is important to your health and happiness. After you’ve settled in, do an inventory of your household linens. Having an adequate supply of comforters, quilts, blankets, and throws is an easy way to ensure everyone is warm enough at night. Everyone has different sleeping preferences, so having a variety available allows each family member to layer their bed to their personal ideal. Really having a hard time getting used to chilly Northern nights? Research electric blankets – you may just discover your new favorite thing.
Cold Weather Living: Take Care of Your Mood
People who live in warm weather climates don’t always understand the impact short, cold days that keep you indoors can have on the mood. Seasonal Affective Disorder is the most extreme response to prolonged gray days; you don’t have to be diagnosed with SAD to experience feelings of tiredness or sadness during the colder months. Counter the weather’s impact with natural daylight light bulbs, proactively spending time with friends having fun, and getting outdoors as much as possible. It helps to keep one eye on the calendar too – it may be hard to believe when winter winds are howling but spring does return, each and every year!
