Where Are Millennials Moving: The Top 10 States

States with the best economies, that are home to the nation’s top corporations and are friendly to start-ups, turn out to be a magnet for Millennials. A recent US News report listed the top ten states people between the ages of 25-29 are moving to. At this age, many people have finished college and are starting their careers. Here’s where they’re going to do it:

TOP CHOICE: CALIFORNIA

Moving to California has long been a dream for many people. Millennials are attracted by the state’s booming economy, Silicon Valley, and of course, there’s always someone hoping to be the next big Hollywood star.

WHAT’S A LITTLE RAIN: WASHINGTON

Seattle is the main reason Washington state comes in #2 on the list. A vibrant, artistic free spirit appeals to many. The state is also home to some very serious business: you can find both Microsoft & Boeing there.

COME FOR COLLEGE & NEVER LEAVE AGAIN: SOUTH CAROLINA

Charleston is booming, and many USC students find the jobs they’re looking for directly after graduation. Also important: South Carolina’s gorgeous beaches. If you’re a sun lover, South Carolina might be exactly what you’re looking for.

NO ONE WILL EVER SURPRISE YOU WITH A VISIT: ALASKA

The economy isn’t fueling Alaska’s youthful resident boom. People are moving to the Last Frontier because they’re passionate about nature, want to have an adventure, or prefer to live far, far away from everyone else.

EVERYONE WILL WANT TO VISIT YOU: HAWAII

Hawaii’s population boom is due in part to tourism: one visit to the islands is enough for some people to want to live there for always. Making a living can be hard, but if you’re in healthcare or hospitality, opportunities abound.

NOT JUST FOR SNOWBIRDS: FLORIDA

While moving to Florida is often seen as a retiree’s dream, the truth is that a significant number of younger people are moving to the Sunshine State as well.  Florida takes the top spot in the national business birth rate.

REALLY, IT’S NOT THE POT: COLORADO

Business is booming in Colorado, particularly in Denver. Colorado has a long history of attracting outdoor lifestyle enthusiasts, and that hasn’t changed: young people are the most likely to move there with the intention of skiing, snowboarding, or doing some hardcore hiking.

NO SALES TAX & PUNKIN CHUNKIN: DELAWARE

Many major financial companies are headquartered in Delaware, and the beaches, while not quite as warm as you’ll find in South Carolina or Florida, are still pretty stellar. Proximity to major cities & relatively reasonable real estate costs make Delaware a prime destination.

RHODE ISLAND: GREAT THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES

Rhode Island is tiny, but people are still eager to move in. The small state is offering big tax incentives to corporations and startups, resulting in many Millennials coming to take advantage of the employment opportunities.

YOU CAN HAVE FUN IN FARGO: NORTH DAKOTA

The oil and natural gas industries are creating lots of high-paying jobs in North Dakota, causing many Millennials to move there. If you’re into cattle ranching, it’s also a good place to go. More high tech? Microsoft’s second largest campus is in Fargo.
