Shleppers’ Survival Guide: Moving During the Holidays

While others are getting ready to unpack the lights and ornaments, you’ve got the less than cheery task of packing up your festive décor, and all of your other belongings as well. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a small local move or a large move cross country – moving during the holiday season is no holly jolly festive task.

That’s why we’re here to help! Put the resting-Grinch-face away and enjoy the most wonderful time of the year with our holiday moving survival guide:

It’s All About Timing

The holiday season is one of THE busiest seasons of the year, not necessarily for moving, but for just about everything else. With that in mind, movers are people too! Don’t wait until last minute to find and book a reliable mover.

Also, keep holiday traffic in mind. According to Bloomberg, the busiest in-store shopping day of the season is the Saturday before Christmas Day. Other days you should expect traffic are:

Black Friday

The week before Christmas

In general, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years are the busiest travel times of the year. It would be best to avoid moving on these specific days.

Budget

The holidays are a time when we tend to spend a little more than our wallets would like! With that in mind, it’s always good to see where you can save a few extra bucks. You may be able to save by planning a mid-week move and AVOID moving on a holiday weekend!

Packing

Keeping the Festivity Alive: It can be a less than jolly time putting your holiday decorations away before the actual holiday. So, when packing, be sure to clearly label your holiday decorations and ask the movers to put them on the truck last. When you get to your new destination, they will be the first thing you unpack!

Don’t Pack More Than You Need to: The holidays are the season of giving right? Be festive and give back! Lighten your moving load and donate your old clothes to Salvation Army, Goodwill, or other like organizations.

Weather

Unfortunately, Shleppers cannot control the weather! Seeing it’s better to be safe than sorry, especially if your moving in New York or to a place with a cooler climate, here are some key things to remember:

Have your heat and electricity turned on in your new home

Have boots, hats, gloves, and shovels handy
