That’s why we were a little surprised to see a story about moving from Yonkers to Morningside Heights in the New York Times. Of course we had to read it, and found out some things we already knew to be true, and one that surprised us.

What Shleppers Already Knew About Moving: Strong Families Get Stronger With the Right Address

Issac and Della, aka the Brooks family, had been living happily in Yonkers for 26 years. Their adult daughter Phoebe had a small place in Brooklyn; Della’s mother, Dolly, was in Queens. Intergenerational living, which can bring grandparents, parents, and children together under the same roof, is an increasingly popular trend. It certainly made sense for the Brooks family: Phoebe could make the most of a limited budget, while Dolly could make an easier adjustment to recent widowhood, when the family shared living quarters.

The property the Brooks family selected has one bedroom that’s on the small size – not exactly a surprise in New York City! – but it’s more than adequate for Phoebe’s current needs. As an actor, she was thrilled by the increased professional opportunities that would come with living in Manhattan.

Issac is particularly passionate about cooking for his friends, yet when the family lived in Yonkers, the process of provisioning and preparing meals was so time intensive that there was little time to do anything else on a day he planned to entertain. The move to Morningside Heights was truly a game changer for him.

The move, Mr. Brooks said, “has reinvented time for us.” Errands are quick, as are trips to the theater and museums. One day they went to a matinee and hosted friends in the evening.

“That would never have happened in Yonkers,” he said. “If you were out, that day was done.” He cooked, as usual, for his guests. “If we forget an ingredient,” he said, “we just go across the street.”
