We recently detailed the hardest items to pack before a move (which you can read here, if you haven’t already), and we would now like to take a crack at something else. What should you pack first when planning your big move? This is the official Shleppers Moving & Storage “What to Pack First” Guide.
Inventory, inventory, inventory
Like we mentioned in our previous blog, taking inventory is vital before you proceed any further with packing. One you have finished listing your belongings and deciding what is coming with you, the real fun begins. Of course it is overwhelming getting started, so allow us to give you some advice:
Start with Storage
Something easy to start with is your already packed items! Chances are if you have things in storage, either in a unit or in the back of your closet, that are already in boxes and bins. Since these items are already packed, you essentially have already started packing!
Clothes + China
Now we are not suggesting to pack clothes next – you won’t have anything to wear! – instead we recommend packing up all of your clothes that are currently not in use. Out-of-season jackets, boots, or swimwear are easy to box up (if they aren’t in boxes already).
Fancy dishes, holiday plates, and other china should also be packed up. If need be, purchase paper and plastic wear to get you through your final weeks before the move.
Ditch the Décor
Our most important piece of advice when deciding what to pack first is simple: don’t pack necessities until the very end! Items like painting, pictures, vases and more are not necessary to keep unpacked in the weeks leading up to a move. Small objects around the house are what will cause you the most stress is you procrastinate. It is easier to slowly gather up these items and pack them securely and safely before you wait too long.
Clean and Pack
Extra sheets, towels, and clothes should be cleaned, and then immediately packed. You shouldn’t need multiple pairs of sheets unpacked so close to moving. Important books and documents are also easy to pack in boxes.
Either way, if you need any help on your move at all, Shleppers is here for you! We are NYC’s expert moving company, so do not hesitate to contact us for any and all moving services.
