Moving Hacks: Tips for Packing Pet Items

The world has changed a lot in the thirty-plus years we’ve been in business. Today, pets live very well. The dog that once had to make do with a collar, leash, and occasional bone today enjoys lots of toys, a big soft bed, and potentially, a wardrobe of its own.

That means when you move – whether it’s just a local neighborhood move or you’re going a longer distance – you’re going to have to pack and move your pet’s stuff.  Here’s what you need to know:

Use Color Coding to Keep All of Your Pet’s Stuff Together

The usual moving advice is to color-code your moving boxes to indicate what room they need to go into.  However, unless your pet is getting a room of its own in your new place, it makes more sense to give your pet’s possessions a color of their own. This will make it easier to keep track of them and make sure nothing gets lost during the move.

Inspect Everything Before You Pack It

A move can be the ideal opportunity to replace your pet’s bedding. This reduces the risk of any pests or pest eggs making the move with you. Other items should be thoroughly inspected to ensure they’re in good shape, smell good, and are things you’re going to be happy with having in your new place.

There’s One Exception!

While you may need to toss out your pet’s bedding, it’s a good idea to hold back on getting rid of your pet’s favorite toy – no matter what shape it’s currently in. A move can be very stressful for a pet. Having their favorite toy available for comfort snuggling can help your pet cope.

Plan on Disassembling the Cat Tree

Many New York City cats love their cat tree. These climbing towers have platforms strong enough to support a cat, but the structure as a whole isn’t generally durable enough to survive the rigors of an apartment move. Plan on disassembling your cat tree and packing the components into moving boxes for best results. Luckily, most quality cat trees are easy to take apart and put back together – assuming you have an Allen wrench handy and kept those instructions!
