How to Move with Taxidermy

Taxidermy Transport from NYC’s Most Trusted Movers

When you’ve spent precious time as a hunter and precious money on curating your mounts for people to admire, it’s important that your trophies can be moved from place to place without damage. Luckily, packing up and transporting taxidermy isn’t too different from any other precious and fragile belonging, so Shleppers has some great moving tips for you.

Safely Moving from Wall to Wall

Cleaning your mounts – It’s more than likely that your taxidermy has been in the same spot for an extended period and has been collecting some dust. While you prep for your move, take the opportunity to clean it off while you have it within reach. A light dusting or vacuuming can do wonders in restoring the luster of your piece. Just take care to avoid any harsh chemicals that could do damage to your mounts.

Wrap ‘em up – After your mount is prepped for your big move, the next step is to protect them for the upcoming ride. Brown paper is a great padding for mounts and is widely available, but old linens will do in a pinch. Fragile details like antlers should be wrapped with extra care to prevent damage. However, be careful to keep tape or other adhesives from coming into contact directly with the mount as they can cause the damage you’re working so hard to prevent.

Grab a crate – The best and safest way to move a mount is in an appropriately sized crate. A rigid wooden crate will ensure that your mount does not move or shift in transit. Once you have your mount safely packed, the extra space in the crate should be filled with packing materials. Filling the free space with soft materials will keep the movement within the crate to a minimum. One material to avoid would be Styrofoam as it easily breaks apart and can stick to your mount, making the unpacking process more difficult.

After the journey – Even with all your efforts to ensure security during travel, it’s possible that your piece may have shifted throughout the ride, so be careful to remove all pieces from the crate as carefully as possible. If damage did occur, be sure to consult a professional who can tend to it properly.
