Moving to Columbus Circle on NYC’s Upper West Side

The Columbus Circle of Life

New York City’s Upper West Side is distinguished by its breathtaking views, gorgeous parks, cultural contributions, and overall slower pace atmosphere than other Manhattan neighborhoods. If you’re moving to Columbus Circle, you’ll want to continue reading below!

Located right on the cusp of the Upper West Side’s southeast boundary lies Columbus Circle. Deemed the geographic center of New York City, Columbus Circle is more frequently associated with a traffic roundabout at the intersection of 8th Avenue, Broadway, Central Park South, and Central Park West. However, the name also describes the neighborhood surrounding the iconic roundabout.

One of the area’s most well-known residencies, Mandarin Oriental, offers incredibly luxurious residential condominiums with first-class living and deluxe services. Oh, and did we mention that Mandarin Oriental is also home to a 360° floor-to-ceiling panorama view of the NYC skyline? Yes, you read that correctly…

Then & Now

The first known observance of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas purportedly took place on October 12, 1792, in New York City. Hundreds of New Yorkers outfitted themselves in Native American garb and collected around an obelisk that commemorated the sailor.

Exactly one hundred years later, a group of Italian citizens bestowed the city with a 12-foot-tall Carrara marble statue of Columbus, which they set above a 26-foot-tall column. The total cost of creation and transportation amounted to $25,000, and thousands of New Yorkers and public figures watched as the statue was placed at the southwest corner of Central Park, now known as Columbus Circle.

Surprisingly enough, Manhattan’s annual Columbus Day Parade does not take place around Columbus Circle. Instead, the parade travels up Fifth Avenue from 44th to 72nd Streets. During that lively and vivacious procession, Columbus Circle is the location of a more conservative tribute to the holiday, with a traditional wreath-laying ceremony featuring a band performance and comments by the New York’s Italian-American community representatives

Places to Go & People to See

It goes without saying that once you are an official resident of the Columbus Circle neighborhood, spending time in Central Park is a must. The park offers tours, concerts, events, attractions, and even a zoo!

Built by well-known architect David Childs, the 2.8 million-square-foot landmark

known as The Time Warner Center serves as the headquarters for Time Warner and CNN.  Standing at 80 stories high and 750 feet tall, these twin skyscrapers offer options for dining, shopping, working and residing.

The Time Warner Center boasts a host of Michelin-starred restaurants– such as Per Se, Masa, and Porter House Bar & Grill.  Enjoy a scrumptious meal by famous chefs like Masayoshi Takayama and Thomas Keller. After enjoying all of the delicious eats that the Time Warner Cable Center has to offer, head to Center Bar to enjoy a nightcap whilst gazing at spectacular views of Central Park and Columbus Circle. For those looking to enjoy delicious food at modest price points, check out some of the delectable restaurants of the Columbus Circle area.

Along with enticing eats, The Shops at Columbus Circle is home to more than 50 retail boutiques and shops for the enjoyment of visitors and residents alike.

Consider heading to the Merchants’ Gate of Central Park to check out the USS Maine National Monument. This statue was built in 1913 to honor the 260 American sailors who died on February 15th, 1898 after the USS Maine battleship exploded in Havana, Cuba.

Just a few blocks away from the Columbus Circle turnaround lies the famous Lincoln Center for Performing Arts. The facility offers performances, jazz education, and broadcasting capabilities.  It’s also home to the 122 seat Jazz venue known as Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Voted as the number one jazz club by NYC hotel concierge, the club provides fantastic soul food, a full bar, and nightly performances for your enjoyment.
