Moving to CA or Other Hot Climate? Read This First!

If you’ve lived in NYC or any other relatively cool city, be prepared to for weather in Southern California, Texas, Arizona, or other hot states to come as a little bit of a shock. In Houston, for example, the average daily temperature can be 95 for weeks at a time. Prepare yourself for your move to a hot climate by keeping the following tips in mind:

The Best Places to Live in South Florida

Early morning and evening are the coolest parts of the day.

Temperatures generally peak around noontime, when the sun is high in the sky. Work with your moving company to develop a timeline that takes advantage of cooler temperatures. Settling in will be much more pleasant if you’re cool and comfortable!

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Most people don’t drink enough liquid as it is. Staying hydrated in a dry, hot climate requires increasing your liquid intake.  If you find yourself developing a splitting headache, feeling dizzy, or feeling weak and about to faint, while you’re moving your things, it is important to let someone know what’s happening, sit down, and drink some water.

Wear white or light colored clothing.

Light colors repel the heat while dark colors attract it. Choosing lighter colored clothing for the day of your move can help you stay cool and comfortable. Another great idea? Sunscreen. When you’re not used to the intense Southern sun, it’s easy to get burned. Protect yourself with plenty of sunscreen and a hat.

Protect vulnerable family members and pets from extreme temperatures.

Little children, elderly family members, and people with serious health issues do not deal well with extreme heat.  Make sure these people can be somewhere safe and air-conditioned while the move is going on. Pets also need a safe, secure place to be. The interior temperature of cars can very easily get much too hot for an animal to stay inside it safely: you will need a shaded location where your animals can freely access fresh water.
