As New York City’s top relocation company, we pay attention to the industry data that reveals where people are moving and why. Now that we’re halfway through 2017, it’s pretty clear that the 2016 moving trend report was spot on: the largest groups of people choosing to move are retirees and millennials – and they’re headed in opposite directions!
The Baby Boomers are Moving West
Moving to California has always been popular. According to the survey, South Dakota, Washington, Oregon and Arizona are all attracting their share of retirees as well. Many Baby Boomers are attracted by the significant tax benefits these states offer older Americans, as well as the warmer climate.
If you’re moving from New York to California, you’ll find some downsizing decisions make themselves. The odds are pretty good you won’t need your winter wardrobe and snow shovels! If you’re hesitant about letting these items go, consider keeping them in a storage unit: once you come to peace with the idea you don’t need them anymore, you can pass them along in a way that makes the most sense for you.
Millennials: Moving to Midwest & Northeastern Cities
According to the 2016 National Movers Survey, job seekers are creating movement patterns of their own as they move cross country in search of employment. North Carolina, South Carolina and the District of Columbia top the list; Midwestern cities with strong economies, affordable homes and a nice quality of life like Kansas City, Des Moines and Omaha are always drawing many Millennials in.
