Packing and Moving Tips for College Students

Mini Moves Made Easy

The school year may already be well underway, but as a college student, there’s always another move just around the corner. Between moving home every winter and summer break and moving back into a new dorm, college house, or apartment every fall, it feels like students are always packing. We understand how hard it can be to sit through finals exams thinking “I still have to pack after this” and the stress that feeling puts on the shoulders of students across the country. To save you a little stress for your next mini-move, here are some of our favorite student packing hacks:

Packing Tips from the Pros

  1. Go back to the basics: For some, it may seem like an obvious choice, but for others, it is a choice that is easily overlooked – the classic suitcase. While packing bag after bag and preparing to get in the car either to or from campus, your back will thank you if one (or a few) of those bags happen to be on wheels.
  2. Start early: Dorm life can get crazy toward the end of the semester. The age-old story goes: semester exams end Friday at 5 pm but all students need to be checked out of the dorms by Saturday at noon. To prevent last-minute stress packing, take it one piece at a time. Make a list of what you’ll need in advance and allow yourself to pack slowly.
  3. Pack Mindfully: Especially moving into school as a freshman, it can be easy to overpack. Keep in mind that dorms have limited space. Everything you bring from home – clothes, shoes, furniture, kitchen supplies – should all be limited. To prevent overpacking, bring only the necessities when it comes to toiletries and try to pack clothes seasonally. There is never a better time to pare down on the clothes in your home closet than right before leaving for school!
  4. Communication is key: Talk to your roommate(s) ahead of time to divvy up the responsibilities of bringing communal items. Communicating ahead of time will prevent you from having duplicate items in a limited space.
