Your Moving Checklist Is Missing One Thing: You

This Self-Care Awareness Month, make your well-being part of the moving plan.

September is Self-Care Awareness Month, and if you’re moving in NYC this month, it’s a good reminder that taking care of yourself deserves a spot on your moving checklist, too.

Even an exciting move can be stressful. Your belongings are in boxes, your normal routine disappears, and suddenly you’re coordinating keys, COIs, elevator windows, parking, and approximately 47 other things. Add a Manhattan walk-up or a trip across boroughs, and moving day can test anyone’s patience.

You can’t eliminate every stressful moment, but you can make the days around your move a little easier on yourself. Here are some tips to help you do that.

Get Organized Before the Boxes Take Over

A simple moving timeline can do wonders for your stress level. Work backward from Move Day and give yourself manageable deadlines for packing, changing your address, confirming building requirements, and handling other essentials.

And don’t save your entire Brooklyn apartment for the final day before your move. Packing a few boxes each day feels much more manageable than discovering at 10 p.m. that your kitchen, closet, and bathroom still need to go somewhere.

Step Away from the Boxes

Your usual wellness routine may look different during a move, but try not to abandon it completely. Prioritize sleep, keep water and healthy snacks handy, and give yourself opportunities to move your body for reasons that don’t involve carrying a bookcase.

Take a walk through Central Park, run along the Hudson River Greenway, get some miles in at Prospect Park, or simply walk a few blocks around your new neighborhood. Exercise can be a welcome mental break when you’ve spent hours thinking about packing tape and cardboard.

If you need something gentler, try a relaxing yoga tutorial on YouTube in the morning or before bed. A few stretches and slow breaths can also feel especially good after a day spent bending over boxes.

Give Your Brain a Break, Too

Self-care doesn’t have to become another item on your to-do list. Ten quiet minutes can be enough.

Try a guided meditation or mindfulness app like Balance, put on a favorite playlist, call a friend, or take your coffee outside instead of drinking it next to a stack of boxes. Once you’re settled, give yourself something relaxing to look forward to: a massage, favorite takeout, or an evening doing absolutely nothing in your new apartment.

Give Yourself Time to Feel at Home

Moving isn’t just physical. Leaving an apartment, block, or neighborhood you’ve called home can bring up more emotions than you expect.

Maybe you’re excited about more space in Queens but still miss your old coffee shop in Manhattan. Maybe you’re ready for your new place in the Bronx, but haven’t quite figured out your new routine yet.

That’s okay. Be patient with yourself. Your apartment doesn’t need to look finished on night one, and your new neighborhood doesn’t have to feel like home immediately.

Take One Big Thing off Your Plate

Sometimes self-care is also recognizing what you don’t need to do yourself.

One of the easiest ways to protect your sanity on Move Day is to let experienced movers handle the boxes, furniture, stairs, and NYC logistics. If you’re searching for Shleppers best NYC movers, our team knows what it takes to navigate Manhattan high-rises, Brooklyn brownstones, Queens apartments, Bronx walk-ups, and plenty of moves in between.
