How to Efficiently Pack your Electronics

When it comes to electronics, it can be easy to be careless and just throw all your electronics into one box.  However, electronics are very expensive, fragile, and require the utmost care when packing.  You need to pack your electronic devices properly so they can withstand the entire duration of the move without breaking or getting damaged.  If you are planning on packing your electronics for your move, it is crucial to take special care when handling them.

Follow these helpful tips from your local NYC moving company to expertly pack all your electronics prior to a move and ensure their safety while being transported.

Purchase Materials

Some of the necessary packing materials required for packing your electronics properly are thick walled cardboard boxes, anti-static packing peanuts, bubble wrap, packing paper, markers, packing tape, sealable bags, PVC tape, and twist ties.

Preparing Electronics for the Move

Gather all user manuals or download them from the website if you do not have them. Next, check to see if your electronics are insured and consider getting temporary insurance to cover the move, packing and unpacking.

Remove all batteries from the devices and remotes to avoid overheating and put them all in one place.

Charge all your rechargeable batteries a few days prior to the move.

Eject all CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays from your devices and tape all the drives shut.

Remove all toner cartridges from printers and secure them in a plastic bag. Additionally, eject all printer cartridges from non-laser printers.

Disconnect all devices and make sure all the electronics are turned off and unplugged.

Labeling Items and Cables

label your cables

Use colored markers and stickers to label all the electronics and their cords and cables.

Place a colored sticker on each end of the cable that goes into a specific device and then place the same colored sticker next to the cable sockets of that device. Then label the sticker with the devices it connects to.

If it is a supply cord instead, write the item it powers on.

Remove all cables, coil them up and put a twist tie or elastic band around them before placing into a plastic bag.

Lastly, on all boxes you use, you are going to want to write “FRAGILE” and “THIS SIDE UP” with an arrow sign in bold letters. Then seal the box with tape.

Preparing and Packing Your Computer

First things first, back up all important information and documents onto a hard drive or cloud in case something goes wrong.

Make sure to remove all dust by vacuuming the inside of your computer with a vacuum cleaner extension. This will help reduce all the dust from getting trapped within the electronics while being shipped.

Pack your computer in a cardboard box, however, instead of using packing peanuts use packing paper. Packing peanuts could damage your computer hardware and could cause your computer to stop working.

Packaging the Electronics Properly

Before packing your electronics, first look to see if you still have the original boxes. We recommend using the original boxes the devices came in because they contain pre-shaped foam pieces and custom inserts to keep the items from moving.  If you do not have the original, then you can use any cardboard box.

First, wrap each electronic device in an anti-static bubble wrap or packing peanuts. Avoid materials that can conduct electricity and make sure to wrap each device separately, so they do not rub against each other.

If the device has a screen, either use a towel or more bubble wrap to protect it, do not use newspaper because it could scratch the screen.

Place a thick layer of the anti-static bubble wrap or towels on the bottom of the box. Then carefully place the electronic device into the box.

Fill all the gaps with either the bubble wrap or packing peanuts to ensure the device is secure during transportation.
