Five Things Most People Forget When They’re Moving

If you’re moving to a new apartment, you want to make sure you don’t leave anything behind. As NYC’s top relocation company, we’ve found that there are 5 things people want to bring with them yet forget to deal with before the moving truck arrives. Don’t get caught off guard: if you’re doing your own packing, make sure you pay special attention to:

1) The artwork on your walls

Painting of Boats and Beach

Paintings, family photos and posters add color and life to our homes. Yet we grow so used to them being in place that they can almost be invisible – at least until the moving company arrives! Artwork needs to be protected to survive a ride in the back of the moving truck intact. Make sure all of your paintings, photos, and posters are taken down and packaged properly for moving.

2) Everything in the basement or utility room

Holiday Decorations in a Box

Some buildings have basement or utility room storage spaces they make available to residents. It’s very common for people to forget they’ve stowed holiday decorations, out of season clothing, bicycles, or other gear in these areas until after they’ve moved. Retrieving and packing these items after the fact can be a costly hassle. Save yourself the headache and check all available storage spaces to make sure you’ve packed your possessions for the move.

3) Your pets

Your pets can not ride in the moving truck. It’s not safe for them. It’s important to make prior arrangements to transport your dog, cat, bird, fish, or other living creature safely to your new address. Also a good idea? Have dogs, cats, and any other creature that might accidentally get out of the house during the move safely contained when the movers arrive. No one wants to lose a pet!

4) Houseplants

Houseplants can travel in a moving truck, but if you want them to survive the journey, they need to be packed with special care. Ideally, plants should be potted in plastic pots for transport, using sterile potting soil. Each plant should be boxed individually, staked for support, and provided with damp paper towels and protective plastic bags to keep them moist during transport. To preserve the health and integrity of your plants, it’s important to keep the amount of time they spend in the moving truck as short as possible.

5) Parking & Elevators

As NYC’s top relocation company, we ensure that parking and elevator arrangements are taken care of before our arrival. However, if you’re doing this on your own, you’ll want to be sure you have a safe place to park the moving truck, as well as reserving the building elevator in advance to facilitate your move.
