Moving Your Plants and Animals: Local & Neighborhood Moves

“The thing about moving an aquarium is you’re not just moving a glass box and some rocks,” Aidan said. “An aquarium is really a world in miniature. You work really hard to create this balanced, healthy ecosystem for your fish.  It’s a complex system that can’t just be replicated instantly.”

As New York’s leading relocation company, we’ve helped lots of families and businesses who have pets and plants move. Any time a living organism is involved, special precautions need to be taken. Aquariums present a special challenge, and we work closely with our clients to determine the best individual moving solution for them. Keeping the fish and other creatures alive and healthy is the top priority, while maintaining the integrity of the aquarium, base, and any equipment needed to keep the system operating properly is also critical. When the move is a short-distance local or neighborhood move, aquarium owners often take a two-pronged approach to moving: using recommended best practices, they move the fish themselves in their own vehicles while having the professionals handle what can be extremely heavy, fragile fish tanks.

The back of a moving truck is not an appropriate setting for any living creature. Dogs, cats, birds, reptiles and other small pets cannot be transported in a moving truck. It’s just too dark, scary and uncomfortable for them. It’s also just not safe. We would never want to put an animal in danger. We will work with families to find ways to transport pets from one address to the next: in many instances, the same techniques you use to bring your pets to the vet will work very well for local or neighborhood moves.

Plants aren’t quite as sensitive as pets, but they do have special needs. Whenever possible, it’s best to have your plants potted in durable plastic containers for moving. Ceramic and other fragile planters can then be packed separately to prevent breakage. Any tall plants may need to be staked securely to help them maintain their form during the move; if you’re moving during chilly or harsh weather, protective oversized plastic bags can help plants avoid being damaged. While most plants can endure an overnight stay in the back of a moving truck, this may not be true if temperatures are extremely high – if you are relocating to a much warmer climate, make sure to discuss this concern with your customer service agent. Fragile or extremely demanding plants – those that need to be watered multiple times a day – are often best moved by the owner, so as to avoid compromising their care conditions.Your Life in a Box: Choosing the best container for your possessions
