Tips for Moving to a New Climate

“I moved to New York City from Atlanta, Georgia just in time for one of the coldest, snowiest winters New York has ever had,” Dale said. “It was absolutely freezing and I had nothing – I mean, no coat, no boots, not a single hat – to wear. I’d never needed any of that stuff and honestly there was so much going on with the new job that I never really thought about it.” Dale was able to remedy his situation with some last-minute shopping, but, as he said, “It would have been much better if I were prepared.”

The first thing to consider when you’re making a long distance move is what the climate will be like where you’re going. If you’re moving within New York City, or you’re staying in the New England area, you shouldn’t experience much of a change. However, going to California, moving to Texas, or other distant destinations can certainly involve a serious climate change.

If you know you’re moving on a permanent basis to a climate that’s very different than the one you’re used to in NYC, it may be that you don’t need to pack and bring everything you own. There’s not many occasions to wear heavy coats, snow boots and other winter gear in Florida; likewise, you probably won’t need a snow blower! With that in mind, you can pare down your household possessions before calling the movers: this will help you save time and money.

It’s a good idea to start shopping for attire and gear you’ll need in your new climate before you get there. One smart tip is to have purchases delivered to your new address – schedule your purchase to arrive after you get comfortably settled in! Think in terms of clothing, as well as the accessories needed to enjoy your new locale: for example, if you’re headed to a warm, tropical coast, it’s a good idea to stock up on extra beach towels and sunscreen!

Whenever possible talk with long-term residents about what the weather is like and what you can expect before you arrive. This will give you objective information from people who really know!
