Keep A Flashlight in the Stuff You Keep With You

Any medications you need regularly, personal hygiene items and other necessities should be packed in a bag you can keep control of throughout your move. Make sure you have a flashlight with fresh batteries in there: that way you can shine a bright light into any dark, potentially spooky corners of your new address so the kids can be sure it’s safe and monster-free.

Trick or Treating is a Thing That Happens

If you’re moving out of NYC into a more suburban or even rural destination, you need to be aware that Halloween customs vary tremendously region by region. In some areas, kids still go door to door in search of candy. They may arrive on foot or by the van load. It’s a good idea to ask ahead what the local practice is and to have a bag or two of treats available in case anyone stops to see you.

Your Pets May Freak Out

A new address is stressful. Crowds of strangers dressed in costumes are stressful. Put those two things together in one day and you’ve got a recipe almost guaranteed to result in an overwhelmed pet. Make good use of your dog crate or cat carrier during the move: this will keep them from making a panicked run into a strange neighborhood when they spot an open door. Acclimating to a new address can take a little time. Be prepared to be patient with your furry friends.

Take Time To Have Some Fun

If your kids are young enough to appreciate trick or treating, moving on a holiday can leave them feeling short-changed and left out of the fun. If you have reliable, trustworthy contacts in your new neighborhood who can include your children in community celebrations, that’s great. If not, try to integrate at least a little holiday fun into the move with goodie bags and a family celebration.
